Heliópolis

Located in the southeastern reaches of São Paulo, with a population of approximately 100,000, Heliópolis–Greek for Sun City—was at one point considered the largest slum in the city of São Paulo, and the second largest in Latin America. The community began to form in the 1970s, populated by families primarily from northeastern Brazil. After an intense process of urbanization, followed by a mobilization of residents and leaders of the community and social programs, Heliópolis has transformed itself into a neighborhood recognized by the state, and renamed Cidade Nova Heliópolis.
